Rediscovering God's Original Design for Health, Healing, and Wholeness
What if the greatest opportunity to improve your health isn't found in a prescription bottle, but in the simple laws of nature that God established from the beginning?
Can the human body heal itself?
It's a question worth asking. We live in a society where medications, medical procedures, and treatments are often the first things we think about when our health begins to decline. While modern medicine plays an important and sometimes lifesaving role, have we overlooked something extraordinary?
God designed the human body with a remarkable ability to repair, restore, and maintain itself.
Think about it. When you cut your finger, your body immediately begins the healing process. When you encounter a virus, your immune system goes to work defending you. When you sleep, your body performs essential maintenance and repair.
These processes are not accidents. They are part of the intricate design of the human body.
But here's the question: Are we giving our bodies what they need to function as God intended?
Are You Going With the Flow?
It's easy to go with the flow, isn't it?
We follow familiar routines, adopt society's habits, and often accept what everyone around us believes about health. After all, going with the flow requires very little effort.
But there's a problem.
When you go with the flow, you surrender control over where the current takes you.
And sometimes that current leads straight downhill into a pile of sludge!
For many people, that sludge represents years of accumulated health problems: high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation, obesity, and other conditions that can gradually rob us of our energy, independence, and quality of life.
As Barbara O'Neille says: Genetics load the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger.
Our daily habits can have a powerful influence on our long-term well-being.
So ask yourself:
Am I intentionally making choices that strengthen my health, or am I simply allowing life's current to carry me wherever it goes?
The good news is that you don't have to remain in that current.
You can begin making a different choice today.

God's Design: Created for Restoration

Consider how wonderfully the human body has been created.
Your heart beats thousands of times each day without you consciously directing it. Your lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Your kidneys filter waste, your liver processes nutrients and harmful substances, and your immune system constantly works to protect you.
Every organ has a purpose. Every system is interconnected.
When one system suffers, others may be affected.
Our bodies were not designed as isolated collections of organs, but as extraordinary living systems that depend upon balance and cooperation.
This is why caring for our health involves more than simply addressing individual symptoms.
It means considering the whole person: physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Ellen G. White beautifully describes Christ's mission in The Ministry of Healing:
"Our Lord Jesus Christ came to this world as the unwearied servant of man's necessity. He 'took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses,' that He might minister to every need of humanity."
— The Ministry of Healing, p. 17; Matthew 8:17
Jesus was interested in more than temporary relief from suffering.
His ministry addressed the whole person.
He restored physical health, brought peace to troubled minds, offered forgiveness, and revealed the love of God.
His example reminds us that genuine wellness reaches beyond the absence of disease.
True wholeness involves the body, mind, and spirit working together in harmony with God's design.
Prevention Is Better Than Waiting for Disease
Ellen White emphasized the importance of understanding and preserving health:
"Too little attention is generally given to the preservation of health. It is far better to prevent disease than to know how to treat it when contracted."
— The Ministry of Healing, p. 128
What a powerful thought!
We often invest considerable time and resources into managing illness after it develops, yet overlook everyday habits that can increase our immune system to fight off disease and disorder.
How much attention do we give to our sleep, the food we eat, the water we drink, our daily movement, and the thoughts that occupy our minds?
We carefully maintain our vehicles, our homes, and our possessions.
But what about the bodies that carry us through every moment of life?
The eight laws of health encourage us to become intentional about caring for what God has entrusted to us.
They remind us that health is not merely something we seek when it is lost; it is something we should nurture while we have it.
The Eight Laws of Health: Simple Principles, Powerful Benefits
1. Sunshine — Let the Light In
Sunshine does more than brighten our surroundings.
Exposure to sunlight helps the skin produce vitamin D, which supports bone health and normal immune function. Natural daylight also helps regulate our internal body clock, influencing sleep and wakefulness.
Interestingly, the body uses a cholesterol-derived compound in the skin during vitamin D production.
Best time is when your shadow is the tallest. Most sunscreens contain many toxic chemicals and also completely block the ultraviolet (UV) rays. To avoid the risk of skin cancer, reduce dietary free fat intake from foods, such as oils, margarine and other foods of this nature. It would be best to avoid these foods altogether. Do not sunburn – you can get too much of a good thing. Six to seven sunburns in your life can double the risk of skin cancer. Vitamin D deficiency can also increase your risk of skin cancer.
Vitamin D helps the pituitary gland regulate hormones. This helps the pineal gland so you can sleep better at night and can even boost your mood.
Your daily challenge: Spend some time outdoors enjoying natural daylight. At least 10-15 minutes 3 times a day.
2. Temperance — Practice the Power of Self-Control
Temperance means practicing moderation in things that are beneficial and avoiding things that are harmful.
It applies not only to what we eat or drink, but also to our habits, emotions, entertainment, work, and use of time.
Self-control gives us the freedom to make choices based on what is best for us rather than simply following our impulses.
Refined sugar should be excluded as much as possible. Refined sugar lacks fiber or protein to slow digestion, refined sugars enter the bloodstream quickly, causing sharp spikes in blood sugar and insulin. The pancreas also suffers, as it constantly attempts to maintain a steady fuel supply to the cells despite the drastic highs and lows that sugar causes.
Caffeine causes your body to have the same fight or flight effect as if you have run face to face with a bear on your morning walk. It can also cause a rise in blood pressure. These devastating effects on the body day after day can lead to several forms of illnesses. Try drinking 2 glasses of water in the morning to wake you up.
Your daily challenge: Identify one habit that needs greater balance and begin making small, intentional changes.
3. Rest — Give Your Body Permission to Recover
Rest is not laziness. It is a biological necessity.
During sleep, the body performs important functions involving memory, hormone regulation, tissue repair, and immune health.
Without adequate rest, even simple responsibilities can become overwhelming.
Three Simple Ways to Improve Your Rest
Quiet Your Mind Before Bedtime.
Turn Off Electronic Devices One Hour Before Bed. The blue light emitted from such devices interferes with your body’s natural production of melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep.
Give Your Digestive System Time to Rest. Avoid heavy meals late in the evening, and try to finish eating at least two or three hours before bedtime. Large meals can take several hours to digest, and eating too close to bedtime may contribute to indigestion, acid reflux, and disrupted sleep.
God also established the Sabbath as a special time to step away from ordinary labor and focus on rest, worship, and fellowship with Him.
Your daily challenge: Establish a consistent bedtime and make room for meaningful physical, mental, and spiritual rest.
4. Exercise — Movement Is a Gift
Our bodies were designed to move. Exercise is the single most powerful way to oxygenate the body.
Exercise builds physical strength and endurance, equipping your body with the energy and resilience needed to navigate life’s daily challenges with greater ease and confidence.
Research has shown that exercise bikes are helpful for those who have a balance problem and with knees and ankle issues as well.
A rebounder in the home is very effective in helping the body to move.
You don't need an expensive gym membership to begin.
Walking, gardening, stretching, cycling, or other enjoyable activities can help you build a more active lifestyle.
Your daily challenge: Begin with a manageable amount of movement and gradually increase your activity as your abilities allow.
5. Nutrition — Nourish the Body God Created
Food is more than something that satisfies hunger. It supplies the nutrients our cells need to function, repair, and maintain life. Science has proven that plant foods contain all the nutrients necessary for the body to perform its necessary function.
Research suggests that high consumption of red and processed meats can increase the risk of certain chronic diseases.
Rather than focusing only on what to eliminate, consider what wholesome foods you can add to your meals.
Your daily challenge: Include more colorful, minimally processed plant foods in your meals.
6. Godly Trust — Strengthen Your Inner Foundation
Health is not only physical.
Our thoughts, emotions, fears, and worries can influence how we experience life and respond to stress.
Trusting God does not mean that life's difficulties disappear. It means knowing where to turn when those difficulties arise.
Faith can provide hope, purpose, encouragement, and strength during seasons of uncertainty.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Your daily challenge: Begin each morning with prayer, gratitude, and a conscious decision to place your concerns in God's hands.
7. Take in Fresh Air — Breathe Deeply and Step Outside
Every cell in your body depends on oxygen.
Your lungs and cardiovascular system work together to deliver oxygen throughout your body and remove carbon dioxide.
Spending time in environments with clean air, particularly outdoors, can also encourage movement, relaxation, and a greater connection with God’s creation.
Your daily challenge: Take a walk outdoors or spend quiet time in a place where you can enjoy fresh, clean air.
8. Hydration — Refresh Your Body From Within
Water is essential to life.
It helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, support circulation, lubricate joints, and remove waste through normal bodily processes.
Even mild dehydration can affect concentration, energy, and physical performance.
Your individual water needs depend on factors such as activity, climate, health conditions, and medications.
Your daily challenge: Make water your primary beverage and drink regularly according to your body's needs.
The Eight Laws of Health and God's Principles for Living
The 8 laws of health and comparison to the 10 commandments is not that they are equal in authority, but that both are expressions of God’s law governing life, and both bring consequences when ignored.
When we understand how something was designed to function, we are better equipped to care for it properly.
And who understands the human body better than the Creator?
A Battle for Our Health and Our Minds
Every day, we make decisions that influence our health.
Some decisions seem insignificant.
What will I eat today? Will I take a walk? Will I get enough sleep? How will I respond to stress? Will I make time for prayer?
Yet small choices, repeated over time, can shape the direction of our lives.
We live in a world filled with distractions, conveniences, and competing priorities.
It's easy to become so occupied with daily responsibilities that we neglect our physical, mental, and spiritual needs.
And this brings us to an important question:
Who or what is directing our choices?
Are we allowing the world around us to establish our priorities, or are we intentionally living according to the principles we believe God has given us?
Our health journey can become an opportunity to practice stewardship, discipline, gratitude, and trust.
Not because perfect health earns God's favor, but because caring for ourselves enables us to better serve Him, care for others, and fulfill our purpose.
Your Journey Toward Wholeness Begins Today

Perhaps you've been feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or discouraged about your health.
Maybe you've tried making changes before, only to fall back into familiar habits.
Or perhaps you've simply never considered how much your everyday choices influence your well-being.
Whatever your circumstances, remember this:
You don't have to change everything overnight.
Start with one principle.
Drink more water. Take a short walk. Establish a regular bedtime. Spend time in natural daylight. Prepare a nourishing meal. Set aside a few quiet moments to pray.
Then build upon that beginning.
Meaningful lifestyle changes often happen through small, consistent decisions rather than dramatic overnight transformations.
God has given us extraordinary bodies with remarkable abilities to maintain, repair, and adapt. While those abilities have limits, and not every condition can be reversed, there is much we can do to support them.
The eight laws of health provide a practical place to begin.
The question is no longer simply, Can the body heal itself?
Perhaps the more important question is:
Am I giving my body the support it needs to function as God designed?
Your journey toward greater strength, better health, and deeper wholeness can begin with the very next choice you make.
Take a Moment to Reflect
- Which of the eight laws of health am I currently neglecting?
- What habits or beliefs are preventing me from making healthier choices?
- How would improving my physical health help me fulfill my God-given purpose?
- What is one change I can begin making today?
Your 7-Day STRENGTH Challenge
Choose one of the eight laws of health and practice it intentionally for the next seven days.
Pay attention to how you feel, what obstacles arise, and what you learn about yourself.
Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection.
Small choices today can help build a stronger tomorrow.
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” — 3 John 1:2 (KJV)
